Why Do Dogs Like Squeaky Toys?

March 25, 2021 //  by Rick Allen

Have you ever wondered why squeaky toys are so amazingly appealing to dogs? These will be by far the most significantly enjoyable type of chew toys that you can give your dog. It’s true that they may not last long in the jaws of your furry friend. But while they do, they are a treat that gives them pleasure like no other.

It’s More Than Just the Sound

As it turns out, dogs love squeaky toys for many more reasons besides the pleasing sound that they make. However, this is a big part of it. Dogs love squeaky toys because this high-pitched squeak is, quite literally, music to their canine ears. It’s a primal sound that puts them straight back in touch with their wild roots.

Indeed, this instant return to nature is probably the quality that really does make dogs like squeaky toys better than any other. The sound is merely the tip of the primeval iceberg. It’s a squeak that sounds a lot like a tiny prey animal being torn apart by the jaws of a ravening carnivorous wolf. This is your dog’s spirit animal.

If this isn’t a good enough reason for your dog to like squeaky toys, you should also consider the fact that it keeps them busy for hours on end. Dogs tend to become instantly absorbed in getting to the bottom of the great squeaky mystery. They will tear and chew and worry at the toy until they find the source of the squeaky sound.

Of course, once they have done so, the user life of the squeaky toy you have bought them will be at an end. But this is no worry for your dog. They are sure you will bring them another. In the meantime, the primal connection that binds them to their lupine roots has led them to hunt, kill, tear apart, and devour another bit of prey.

Nothing Succeeds Like a Squeaky Toy

There are plenty of other types of dog treats that you can and should buy for your favorite furry friend. But it’s always good to keep in mind that large, small, young, and old dogs like squeaky toys like no other.

It is true that some breeds of dogs like quieter chew toys, such as bones or bacon bits, that don’t make much of a noise. They can gladly chew on these little tidbits and toys for hours on end. But at the end of the day, nothing succeeds in endearing your canine companion to your company like the gift of a satisfyingly squeaky toy.

In fact, they like squeaky things so much that they are prepared to invest days in playing with them. For a young pup or a dog with overdeveloped chewing habits, a toy that makes a squeak will be a literal godsend. They will spend their time chewing on the toy that makes that satisfying sound instead of on your slippers, shirt, or couch.

Toys that make this noise can take many forms. Big or small, your dog is bound to love them all. There is something about these noise-making objects that captivates their attention like nothing else on the planet. This keeps your home safe from an invasion of a bored, unfulfilled canine who doesn’t have anything squeaky to warm their heart.

Squeaky Toys Promote Doggy Dental Health

Another ready answer to the question of “Why do dogs like squeaky toys?” is because of the excellent result it has on their dental health. Chewing squeaker toys is a great way to keep their teeth and gums in the best of shape. It also gives their jaws plenty of motivation. It’s the perfect cue to stay at a peak level of health and strength.

Nothing will take the place of brushing your teeth with toothpaste. This is as true for your dog as it is for you. But having said that, it’s also true that chew toys that contain a squeaking mechanism are an excellent aid to keep their dental health in strong form.

When your dog hears the squeak made by their favorite toy, it does more than summon up the spirit of the ancient chase. It also gives them valuable reassurance that their teeth and jaws are working in the proper fashion. After all, the fact that they are strong enough to make the toy squeak is valuable confirmation of their prowess.

As a result, your dog will enjoy a high level of satisfaction and validation from worrying about its favorite chew toy. The sheer joy with which they attack this latest challenge will last until the toy is totally chewed up. Luckily, there are plenty of chewy, squeaky goodies on the market for them to sharpen their wits and teeth upon.

It’s also good to take notice of the fact that dogs that chew toys regularly will have much less plaque and bacteria buildup on their teeth. This means that they will need to visit the dentist less often. It also means that they will have a much healthier and longer life. The more they chew, the healthier and happier their days will be.

Make Sure to Size Up Your Squeaker

One thing that you will definitely need to do before giving a squeaky toy to your dog is to make sure that it will be the right one for them. You don’t want to give too large of a toy to a small breed. The thought of them choking on a big squeaky toy that is too much for their small jaws to handle should cause you to reconsider your choice.

As long as the toy is appropriate for its breed, weight, size, and age, you should have no problem selecting the best squeaky toy for their needs. This is an exercise that you and your favorite furry friend can easily bond over. If you know their favorite shapes, colors, and smells, you can get them a treat they will totally love.

It isn’t hard to please your best friend. But you want to do right by them. Don’t get them a toy that is too big for them to chew on or so small that it can easily break apart. You don’t want to injure them with splinters that could lodge in their gums. The toy you buy needs to be well manufactured in order to avoid such hazards.

You also want to make sure the toy isn’t made with any chemicals that they may prove to be allergic to. It’s a good idea to check with a vet beforehand to find out what kind of toys are best for them.

Squeakers Are a Dog’s Best Friend

For all of the reasons listed above and more, squeaky toys are the best friend of a man’s best friend. Your dog will love their new toy and they will love you for making sure that they are provided with plenty of them. This means that it will be a very good idea for you to stock up on as many of these treats as you can afford.

Luckily, this will be a short order to fulfill. There are squeaky chew toys by the thousands. You can find them at your local grocery store, pet supply store, or simply order them straight off the world wide web. If you really want to keep your dog happy, healthy, and connected with the wild, a chew toy that squeaks is the way to do it.
