Halo Dog Collar Reviews: A Wireless Smart Fence from Cesar Millan (Updated 2023)

The Halo Collar first caught my eye in February of 2021 and before I knew it, it was spreading like wildfire.

Perhaps the biggest thing about Halo is that this GPS dog collar puts training modules from “The Dog Whisperer” himself, Cesar Milan, right in your smart phone.

Halo allows you to keep track of your dog’s location, monitor their activity, and issue encouragement and prevention feedback—including shocks, which I did try on my own neck. I do not, however, advise anyone to try that at home.

But what about the Halo Collar’s fencing capabilities?

If you’re primarily looking for a GPS dog fence to keep your pup in a defined boundary in your yard or on the go then you should check out the SpotOn. Its the only GPS dog fence I’ve used that is accurate and reliable enough for training your dog to stay in a defined area.

In my experience, the Halo Collar is really more of a smart training collar. While it does offer fencing capabilities, I don’t think that it’s precise enough for your dog to learn and understand the logic behind it in the long term.

Regardless, if you do choose the Halo Collar for your pup use my link below to get the best price that I know of.

Then you’ll want to set up your account, and the Halo app provides you with a plethora of tutorials to help you get on your way throughout the entire process.

You’ll need to add your pet’s information, including details on their breed, birthday, weight, and you’ll need to connect to wifi and initialize satellite connection to get up and running. The whole process took me about 10 or 15 minutes.

Before long I was up and running and ready to make my first fence.

Creating Fences

With the Halo, you basically draw the fence on your smart phone.

As I mentioned I wore the collar myself to test how Halo is in action. Unfortunately, he results of my boundary testing with the Halo Collar were quite inconsistent.

The GPS location seemed to lag with updating, it would jump around a bit, and generally speaking the warning zones and boundaries were not effectively communicated with the collar’s correction system.

I suspected that the heavy overcast in the sky might have had an impact on the GPS performance so I returned on a clear day to compare the Halo side-by-side with two other GPS collars: the SpotOn and the Wagz Freedom collar. Unfortunately, the Halo Collar didn’t perform any better with clear skies as far as I could tell.

I can imagine the Halo Collar’s boundary system would be very confusing for a dog, and they probably wouldn’t understand why they’re getting shocked all of a sudden or how to stop it, and obviously they can’t take the collar off themselves.

Frankly, I wouldn’t trust this system not to issue a shock when your dog is within the boundaries, given the location discrepancies I’ve seen.

Training your dog

In my opinion the Halo Collar should only be used without the static correction and as always your dog should be thoroughly trained to understand the boundaries first. The Halo App provides tons of training materials to help you and your pup get up and running successfully.

If you have a dog that likes to roam, the Halo system may be a good option for you. However, it’s important to remember that the Halo Collar isn’t for everyone. Though this GPS dog fence is great for tracking your dog’s location and can be a very solid training tool, it’s really meant for those who typically let their dogs roam outside and who are comfortable with the basic concepts behind the workings of invisible fences. Some dogs will not be deterred by anything that an invisible fence offers the best dog owners can objectively look at their animals and decide whether or not this device will be safe for them.
