CBD (cannabidiol) oil isn’t just for humans anymore. Dogs that experience a range of physical ailments from arthritis pain and inflammation to anxiety, seizures, and more can find comfort and relief from ingesting treats that contain the best CBD oil for dogs.

Don’t worry, though; your furry friend won’t have any loopy side effects that you might expect from cannabis. Treats and other pet products with CBD oil don’t contain any of the psychoactive components of the cannabis plant, known as THC (tetrahydrocannabinol).

According to the American Kennel Club (AKC), CBD oil has been proven safe for dogs. Although conclusive studies on its efficacy are still underway, many veterinarians and pet owners have plenty of anecdotal evidence about the kinds of relief they have seen these products provide for their dogs, cats, and other pets.

While it seems like every manufacturer is jumping on the CBD bandwagon, some companies and products stand out because they infuse quality into their ingredients, CBD potency, and more.

We sifted through the many available products and have compiled a shortlist with some pros and cons of our favorite CBD dog treats for your pup to enjoy.

The Best CBD Dog Treats in 2022

Out of the many CBD dog treat options on the market, we chose our favorites based on ingredient quality, CBD potency and purity, the amount of CBD infused into the treats, and the availability of pup-pleasing flavors.

We found one product that stands out in all four categories. Our top pick is Honest Paws Calm Bites.

Read on for highlighted pros and cons, along with a summary of additional helpful information for Honest Paws Calm Bites and the other eight solid contenders. We’ve covered ingredient quality, formulation, why we think the product stands out, and more.

Our Favorite: Honest Paws Calm Bites

Honest Paws Calm Bites.

  • Human-grade ingredients, non-GMO, organic, gluten-free, vegan
  • Ingredients meet the highest-quality standards, earning the NASC seal of approval
  • CBD quality and potency is third-party tested with a Certificate of Analysis
  • Delicious, pup-approved flavor and treats come in classic crunch or soft chew varieties

CONS

  • None that we could find

These award-winning CBD treats deliver the highest-quality ingredients for your precious fur baby. Your furry friend will get 5mg of organic, full-spectrum CBD oil distilled from hemp with each treat bite. You can get either the crunchy or chewy variety to match your canine’s preference. The chews work exceptionally well for senior dogs, who may have trouble chewing crunchy treats.

The company uses Colorado-grown hemp oil that has been tested and verified for purity by a third-party testing firm. These tasty treats come in a delicious peanut butter flavor with a mouth-watering texture that Fido will love. The carefully selected ingredients are non-GMO, vegan, gluten-free, and organic. Honest Paws treats are also hypo-allergenic, with no soy, corn, or dairy products.

Honest Paws wins our award for the best CBD dog treats because they place such a high priority on quality. The company is also very transparent about the ingredients that go into each product and provides a website write-up on each one. This information helps educate customers on what each ingredient contributes to the quality, taste, and effectiveness of these yummy treats for their canine.

The company also provides educational content and resources on its website to help pet owners understand the benefits and legality of CBD products, along with proper dosing and other helpful information. Suppose you’re still considering whether CD treats are suitable for your pet. In that case, the website also provides answers to several common questions about the safety, side effects, benefits, and more of CBD dog treats and oils.

Best Soft Chews: The Anxious Pet Relax & Roll Soft Chews with CBD

The Anxious Pet Relax & Roll Soft Chews with CBD.

PROS

  • Chewy bars for dogs that don’t like dry, crunchy treats
  • Vet-formulated and tested by an independent third party
  • Provides relaxation and anxiety relief with making your dog drowsy
  • Comes in convenient packs of 5, 10, 15, or 30 bars

CONS

  • Product does not contain preservatives so must be stored away from moisture, heat, or light

If your pet gets anxious before a vet visit or starts shaking during thunderstorms, these delicious treats can help Fido roll with it and relax. These easily portable bars make it convenient for you to have relief on hand for your faithful canine, no matter where you go.

One bar contains a 15mg serving of CBD, along with a proprietary blend of organic MCT oil mixed with relaxing and nutritious supplements that are known for their calming abilities.

The bars were veterinarian-formulated with a focus on non-allergenic ingredients. The peanut butter-banana flavor will have your pup snapping up these treats and feeling relief in no time.

Have no fear, though; the bars contain no real peanuts, so they’re safe even if your dog has a peanut allergy. The company recommends feeding these bars once or twice daily, depending on your dog’s activity level.

Since each bar contains 15mg of CBD, check with your vet regarding the proper CBD dosage for dogs. Smaller dogs may require much lower dosages, although the bars are soft, and you can break them into multiple portions. The Anxious Pet also makes CBD chews, which some dogs prefer.

The company offers a 60-day moneyback guarantee, which is more generous than some other companies and gives you a chance to try the treats for several weeks to see if they help. Since most high-quality CBD treats have a somewhat steep price tag, this can make a difference for many pet owners with finicky Fidos.

Best Meaty Flavor Options: MediPets CBD Dog Treats – Beef Treats

MediPets CBD Dog Treats - Beef Treats.

PROS

  • Treats come in a range of meat-based flavors
  • Products come in a variety of CBD dosage strengths
  • Treats come in bacon-like strips for easy feeding
  • Made with quality in the US

CONS

  • Some products contain corn or meat by-products

If you think your pup can benefit from CBD oil, but he turns his nose up at baked treats flavored with apples, oats, and blueberries, you’re in luck. MediPets offers CBD-infused dog treats in a variety of meaty, delicious, dog-approved flavors. Choose from wavy bacon and cheese bites, beef wraps, kabobs, meaty steak, and more. The company’s product line includes 16 different CBD treat varieties with dosages from 3mg to 10mg each.

Make sure to read the treat bag label and verify the dosage you need to get the best results for your dog. MediPet also sells treats formulated with lamb or salmon as good alternatives for pups with sensitive tummies. If your dog is fidgety and won’t eat treats, the company also offers canine CBD supplements in oil or sprays to make it as easy as possible to get your pet the dosage he needs.

MediPets treats are subjected to rigorous testing, and you can view the lab reports for each of their products on the company’s website.

Best THC-Free: KING KALM CRUNCH – CBD Dog Treats – Premium CBD Chews for Dogs and Pets

KING KALM CRUNCH - CBD Dog Treats.

PROS

  • Organic, non-GMO ingredients
  • No traces of THC
  • Tasty for dogs
  • Calming, all-natural ingredients

CONS

  • At the higher end price-wise

Licensed pharmacists infuse these canine cookies with CBD phytocannabinoids to ease pet anxiety and inflammation. These treats have also been formulated to contain high levels of healthy vitamins, omega-3s, and macronutrients, so you don’t need to feel bad about treating your pup.

These tasty dog treats come as cookies in the shape of a crown for your canine king or queen. Professionally formulated by a pet nutritionist, these treats include heart-healthy ingredients such as oats and honey-roasted almonds. They’re also baked at low heat to preserve their nutritional content.

The calming power of these treats comes from 3 to 5 mg of naturally occurring CBD per cookie. An independent lab has tested the company’s products to ensure quality. These treats tend to be a bit more expensive, but they come with more servings per bag. The lower CBD content of 3 to 5mg makes these treats great for smaller dogs or for introducing your pet to CBD products.

Best Hypo-Allergenic: Fab CBD Dog Treats

Fab CBD Dog Treats.

PROS

  • Treats are veterinarian-formulated with no corn, wheat, dairy, or soy
  • Dosing instructions right on the package
  • Pesticide-free ingredients
  • Contains full-spectrum CBD from hemp farmed in Colorado

CONS

  • Currently available in only one flavor

Fab CBD Calm & Cool premium dog treats bring your dog the benefits of CBD oil wrapped in a delicious, peanut-butter and apple-flavored treat he will love. The company uses a process called chromatography to ensure these treats don’t contain any THC. Still, they do contain full-spectrum CBD oil with its beneficial terpenes and other cannabinoid components.

Some companies refine these out of their CBD oil to create pure CBD. The CBD isolate result is pure CBD oil but may not offer as many benefits as the full-spectrum oil.

The delightfully crunchy, yet not too hard, biscuit treats are made with an oat base that offers an excellent texture for Fido’s eating pleasure. Unlike some companies that add a long list of ingredients to their product with no proof that they really work, Fab CBD prefers to keep the ingredients list small and simple. Just wholesome, healthy ingredients.

As additional relaxing supplements, your dog will benefit from coconut oil, chamomile, and passionflower. While these treats work great for helping your dog relax, they also make great training rewards and just-because treats.

Best for Anxiety: Penelope’s Bloom Stress + Anxiety Pet CBD Treats (600 mg)

Penelope’s Bloom Stress + Anxiety Pet CBD Treats.

PROS

  • Quality full-spectrum CBD oil from organic, vegan, non-GMO human-grade hemp
  • Smells like fresh-baked cookies, great for picky eaters
  • Comes with an extra-strength dosage, great for large dogs

The manufacturer has gone all out to ensure that your dog gets only the best. The makers use eco-conscious ingredients and package the tasty treats in recyclable pouches. Your canine is bound to enjoy these treats with all-organic contents such as blueberries, spinach, sweet potato, and oats.

In addition to CBD, these tasty treats also contain other relaxing nutritional herbs and supplements, including chamomile, passionflower, tryptophan, and ginger. These nutritive additives can offer additional support for anxiety, agitation, and gastrointestinal upsets. Each pouch contains 30 treats with 20mg of CBD each, and 50-to 100-pound pets get one treat per serving.

The company makes these great treats with the same formulation in lower dosages for smaller breeds. Penelope’s Bloom provides a dosing chart on its website to help you decide how many treats to feed, based on your dog’s weight.

Best for Senior Dogs/Arthritis: Jane’s Pets Dog CBD Joint Care Soft Chews

Jane’s Pets Dog CBD Joint Care Soft Chews.

PROS

  • Made from regulated Kentucky hemp
  • Contains glucosamine, chondroitin, and MSM for senior dog arthritis pain
  • Uses CO2 extraction process to maintain full-spectrum CBD potency
  • Affordable price

CONS

  • Contains cane molasses. Check with your vet on this ingredient if your pet has any health conditions

If your dog suffers from arthritis pain and inflamed joints, check out Jane’s Pets Dog CBD Joint Care treats soft chews for dogs with arthritis pain and stiffness. These CBD treats also provide your pup with glucosamine, MSM, and chondroitin sulfate. The flavor of these treats leans more toward savory, with cheese and chicken liver as part of the product ingredients.

With 5 mg of CBD per serving, this isn’t a high-dose CBD product, but it offers two benefits in one, with the addition of the other joint-care ingredients. If you have a higher-weight dog and choose to feed it more than one treat at a time for a larger CBD dose, also pay attention to the doses of the other arthritis ingredients to make sure you stay within safe ranges for your pet.

CBD oil has been shown to exert anti-inflammatory effects that reduce or relieve pain from stiff, arthritic joints. Research has yet to provide conclusive evidence on the benefits of glucosamine and chondroitin for canine arthritis.

However, the Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association published a review showing that glucosamine can provide dogs with moderate pain relief on par with some prescription drugs [1].

Best Vegan: CBDfx CBD Pet Treats for Joint & Mobility

CBDfx CBD Pet Treats for Joint & Mobility.

PROS

  • Treats are vegan, soy-free, with human-grade ingredients
  • Uses CBD oil from non-GMO, organically grown, pesticide-free cannabis plants
  • Treats contain additional mood-enhancing and calming herbal extracts
  • Although vegan, treats have bacon flavor that dogs love

CONS

  • Might not be for you if you’re looking for treats with CBD alone (with no other supplements)

CBDfx started creating CBD products for humans several years back and has used its expertise to develop high-quality treats for canines. The company has infused broad-spectrum CBD into its treats, with 15mg per delicious serving.

Many dog owners feed CBD treats to help their pets handle anxiety. CBDFX has enhanced its CBD dog treats with additional calming herbal extracts of chamomile, passionflower, and valerian root. These have been shown to exert relaxing effects on both pups and humans. The treats also contain the mood-boosting supplements L-tryptophan and GABA to further enhance CBDfx CBD treats’ effectiveness in handling your pet’s anxiety.

Broad-spectrum CBD oil, used in many dog treats, contains only trace amounts of THC. Note that THC, the psychoactive component of cannabis, can be toxic to your furry friend.

Best Variety: Edibites CBD Chews For Dogs

Edibites CBD Chews For Dogs.

PROS

  • Unique and exciting flavors to get your pup to love CBD treats
  • Treats come in either soft or crunchy formulations
  • Edibites have no soy, corn, wheat, or dairy ingredients
  • To preserve the product’s potency, Pet Releaf’s CBD oil is air-extracted

CONS

  • The non-traditional flavors may not work for every dog

If you want to offer some new, exciting flavor varieties to your pup, try giving them some CBD relief in the form of pizza flavor, sweet potato pie, or even sushi-flavored treats! Doggy snacks and treats are supposed to be fun, and your pet will have a blast with these great flavors.

The Edibites flavors also include peanut butter and carob, peppered bacon, and other mouth-watering varieties. For extra fun, the company also offers their pizza and sushi flavor options in bags with a special-edition Keith Haring design for dog lovers who also love dog art.

When it comes to the CBD component of these treats, Pet Releaf infuses them with full-spectrum hemp oil sourced from Colorado family farms. Treats for smaller dogs contain 1.5 mg of CBD oil, while treats for larger breeds contain 3mg of CBD per serving.

This dosage is on the lower end, but if you are starting your pet out on CBD, the lower dose lets you both ease into it with no worries. The company also offers a trial-size bag at a reasonable cost so that your pup can test-drive the treats without having to commit to an entire month’s supply.

What CBD Characteristics Should I Look For in Dog Treats Infused with CBD?

Look on the treat package to see whether the CBD oil used is full-spectrum or an isolate. Some dog treats manufacturers use CBD isolate, which strictly contains pure CBD.

CBD isolate doesn’t include other cannabis components that work in synergy with CBD to provide your pet’s full scale of health benefits. However, CBD-isolate products work well to reduce anxiety, relieve pain and nausea, reduce inflammation, and boost the immune system. You might find the price of CBD-isolate products fits your dog’s needs or your budget better, especially for long-term use.

Full-spectrum CBD contains additional cannabinoids, terpenes, and flavonoids from the hemp plant, increasing the product’s effectiveness. Both forms of CBD are, by law, free of THC due to its toxicity to dogs. Federal law requires manufacturers of CBD pet products to use only CBD distilled from hemp plants that do not contain any significant quantities of THC. Research studies have shown that both CBD isolate and full-spectrum CBD oils have less than 0.3% THC content.

Full-spectrum CBD oil provides all of the same benefits as CBD isolate. In addition, it may offer additional benefits to dogs with seizures, extreme anxiety and barking, muscle spasms, and inflammation. Both forms of CBD have shown some evidence of anti-tumor properties as well.

CBD isolate does not cause the side effects of dry mouth and temporary low blood pressure, although these can happen with treats containing full-spectrum CBD oil. The third form of CBD, called broad-spectrum, has all the available plant cannabinoids from the cannabis plant except for THC, although this form is not used in many pet treat formulations.

What Ingredients Should I Look For in Dog Treats Infused with CBD?

The most important thing to look for is a quality treat formulation. Neither humans nor dogs have evolved to digest genetically modified foods, so look for non-GMO ingredients. Check to see if the manufacturers have sourced the ingredients in the USA.

While they may cost a bit more, organic ingredients such as eggs, sweet potatoes, coconut oil, oats, and other additives provide healthy fiber and nutrients and keep your pup from ingesting pesticides and other chemicals.

Read the labels and avoid products that list artificial flavorings, fillers, and any chemical names that are hard to pronounce or have more than three syllables. Also, keep an eye out for any added sweeteners such as cane sugar, dextrose, or fructose. If your dog has diabetes or other health conditions, these sugars can wreak havoc on their system and make them severely ill.

While you’re checking the labels, also look for ingredients that your dog will love, such as apples, oats, sweet potatoes, and blueberries. Not all treats are equal, and CBD can’t do its work if your pup doesn’t like the treats and won’t eat them often enough to get a consistent dose.

Opt for CBD treat products that contain healthy grains such as barley, brown rice, and oats. Cheaper ingredients such as corn, meat by-products, artificial flavors, and colors provide no health benefits and can, in some cases, be detrimental to your dog’s health.

What Potency Should I Choose for CBD Dog Treats?

Just like any other treatment, CBD treats and dosages are not one-size-fits-all. Bodyweight determines the amount of CBD to give your pet, so if you have a larger or heavier dog, he will require more milligrams of CBD oil than a smaller pup to achieve the desired relief.

The taste of the treats and whether your pup likes them matters too. The flavor needs to appeal to your dog enough for them to ingest the correct dose of CBD to make a difference.

You can use a general rule of thumb to figure out the ideal starting dosage for your dog, which is .25mg of CBD per pound of your pup’s body weight. For example, if your dog weighs 40 pounds, you can give him two 5mg treats per day, for a total of 10mg.

Double-check the labels on each CBD treat you feed since the dosage can vary between manufacturers. Companies often list the total milligrams of CBD for the entire package on the front label. To figure out how much CBD is in each serving, look at the total number of treats in the package and divide the total CBD milligrams by that number.

Manufacturers commonly sell treats in packages of 30, so a CBD product containing 600mg total equates to 5mg per dog treat. If you have any doubts about the proper dosage for your dog, speak with your vet.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

As a pet owner, you may have some reservations about CBD dog treats, so check out these answers to some of the most popular questions to put your mind at ease.

Do CBD Treats for Dogs Work?

This question comes up a lot, and The American Veterinary Medical Association doesn’t state any position on CBD products for pets. However, while not endorsing the use of CBD in dogs, the American Kennel Club does not discourage it and notes that many veterinarians and dog owners have solid anecdotal evidence regarding the effectiveness of CBD for various pet ailments.

A long list of prescription-drug treatments exists to treat dogs, and many scientific reports support their effectiveness. However, growing evidence shows that, for specific ailments, CBD can offer pets many of the same benefits without the unwanted side effects of prescription drugs. Additionally, CBD usage won’t require repeated vet visits and monitoring in the same way as prescription medications might.

CBD is not a magical cure by any means. As a pet owner, though, if you have exhausted other treatment options for your pet, cannabis products may be the next step in your pup’s treatment plan. Every dog is different, but you won’t know if CBD can help your dog until you give it a try.

What CBD Treats are Good for Dogs?

Dog treats containing CBD are good for dogs when the products have quality, non-GMO ingredients and carefully distilled CBD oil. Many companies manufacture these treats, but quality manufacturers usually disclose more product details on their websites for transparency. Look for lab test results verifying the quality and potency of the added CBD oil. Also, ensure that you choose a product that says it contains full-spectrum CBD oil for more benefits.

Better-quality products have often been either formulated by or have had the recipe reviewed by a veterinarian. If you can, choose products made with organic, non-GMO ingredients and avoid products containing fillers, sugars, synthetic flavorings, or chemical preservatives.

Here are our top picks of CBD treats that are good for your dog.

  • Our All-Around Favorite: Honest Paws Calm Bites
  • Best Soft Chews: The Anxious Pet Relax & Roll Soft Chews with CBD

  • Best THC-Free: KING KALM CRUNCH – CBD Dog Treats – Premium CBD Chews for Dogs and Pets
  • Best Hypo-Allergenic: Fab CBD Dog Treats
  • Best for Anxiety: Penelope’s Bloom Stress + Anxiety Pet CBD Treats (600 mg)
  • Best for Senior Dogs/Arthritis: Jane’s Pets Dog CBD Joint Care Soft Chews
  • Best Vegan: CBDfx CBD Pet Treats for Joint & Mobility
  • Best Variety: Edibites CBD Chews for Dogs

Keep in mind that doggy taste buds differ, and your pet may prefer meat-flavored CBD treats instead of biscuits made with oats and fruits or vegetables, for example. You can choose products that come in soft chews if you have a senior dog or a pup with sensitive or missing teeth. There are plenty of options on the market for crunchy-biscuit lovers as well.

The dosages vary between manufacturers, so consult with your vet to see how much CBD your pup should start out taking. When reading the treat labels, manufacturers often state the total milligrams of CBD in the whole package of treats and tell you how many treats the bag contains. All you need to do is divide the number of treats into the total CBD amount to find the milligrams per treat.

Is CBD Oil or Chews Better for Dogs?

CBD will give your pet the same benefits from a treatment perspective, whether you provide the oil in chewy or biscuit treat form or simply as drops given to them orally. The convenience of feeding your pup treats is probably the best reason to opt for them over the oil. Conversely, using the oil allows you to have more control, drop-by-drop, over your dog’s dosage.

CBD oil, especially in its concentrated extract form, has a taste and smell that might take your dog some time to acquire. While pups don’t necessarily have discriminating taste buds like humans, they have much more delicate and sensitive noses. Dogs usually make their eating choices based on how food smells rather than how it tastes.

This doggy behavior presents a challenge for CBD dog treat formulators because they must find ways to mask the strong smell of the CBD oil with the right combination and amount of aroma and flavors to get dogs to find the dog treats enjoyable.

If you have trouble getting your dog to ingest CBD oil in drop form, you can find treats with meat-based flavors to make the oil more palatable. You can also find CBD oil infused into baked treats with ingredients like oats, apples, and sweet potatoes. Some even smell like fresh-baked cookies, and what dog doesn’t love a good cookie?

Is CBD Safe to Give to Your Dog?

No formal studies have yet been published regarding the safety of CBD for dogs, but a large amount of anecdotal evidence exists regarding canines and CBD safety. Many dog owners and veterinarians have seen significant improvements in dogs using CBD products, with minimal to no side effects. If you have any reservations, speak with your vet before offering your dog any CBD treats, oils, or sprays.

To use CBD products safely with your pet, give your dog a dosage appropriate for their weight. While no studies have yet surfaced regarding side effects, some human side effects that can also show up in dogs include dry mouth, which could show in dogs as less saliva.

A temporary drop in blood pressure could take place if you give your pet a large dose, causing your pet to experience feeling lightheaded. Additionally, as your dog finds relief from anxiety or pain, it might become relaxed and sleepy.

It’s imperative to give your pup only CBD products formulated especially for dogs, because the THC component of cannabis, often present in products made for human consumption, is toxic to dogs. Canine CBD products use CBD oils that have been manufactured to keep THC to nonexistent levels.

The AKC’s Chief Veterinary Officer, Dr. Jerry Klein, says that manufacturers typically derive CBD or cannabidiol oil from hemp plants rather than cannabis plants containing THC. CBD products for dogs are legal in the US only if derived from hemp plants. They must have less than 0.3 percent of THC, the plant’s psychoactive component that causes euphoria.
