Contrary to The Looney Tunes cartoon, the bulldog is not a frightful dog breed. Bulldogs get along well with both humans and usually with other dogs. They make great watchdogs although they can sometimes be a bit stubborn. This is a non-sporting breed developed in the British Isle many centuries ago. They have a very smooth coat, wrinkly cheeks, powerful front legs and smaller hind legs. They stand from 13 to 15 inches high at the shoulder and weigh from 40 to 50 lb. Their short, flat-lying coat is a glossy brindle, white, red, or fawn color. The low-slung body, broad chest, large skull, and undershot jaw of the bulldog give it an appearance of stubbornness and defiance. With the proper training, defiance and stubbornness will not be an issue. Bulldogs make excellent pets and have a strong confident aire about them that is a well-loved quality of all bulldog owners.
