Back in the early 20th century, Alexander White of South Carolina saw a small brown spaniel type dog wandering about after church. The dog appeared to be a stray so he took him home with him. This stray had a wonderful bird sense so he gave it to his hunting partner L. Whitaker "Boykin". The Boykin Spaniel breed has evolved from this one dog. The Boykin Spaniel is docile, pleasant and very obedient breed of dog. They are fantastic swimmers. Most owners report that these dogs each have their own unique personality. Hunters also say thay have an enthusiastic field ability that is rarely matched. Their fine nose and their enthusiasm in the field make them very versatile hunters. These dogs generally weigh between 25-40 pounds and stand 15-18 inches high. They will do okay in an apartment as long as they are adequately exercised. A small yard is sufficient but remember that this is a working dog and therefore needs a lot of daily exercise. |
