The Bouvier des Flandres is a powerful, impressive dog with a massive and heavily-coated head, beard and mustache. The thick beard and shaggy eyebrows give the dog a very distinctive appearance almost like a wooly mammoth! The Bouvier stands from 23 to 28 inches high at the shoulder and weighs from 60 to 70 pounds. The distinctive coat ranges in color from fawn to black. He is primarily a herder of cattle and sheep, but it is also being trained successfully as a police and war dog. Don't let his day job fool you. He is an obedient dog with a pleasant nature. He looks intimidating, but is actually very calm and gentle. Also, they tend to be enthusiastic, responsible, even tempered and fearless. They have also been known to make excellent guard dogs and watchdogs becasue they are relatively easy to train. |
