The Bergamasco Sheepdog is an ancient breed that is at least 2000 years old. Ancient dog lovers speak of a "dog of the Alps" whose coat was long, thick and shabby. Although it may only be a legend, this dog looks strikingly similar. He is strong, brave and very intelligent. This is a medium to large sized dog, well proportioned with a rustic appearance. His imposing aspect is increased by the characteristically matted and flocked coat which makes him different from any other dog. He has a thick curtain of hair that covers his eyes and serves as a visor so that he is not bothered by the sun reflecting off the snow. The color of the coat can be anything from gray or silver gray to coal color. The Bergamasco typically stands about 24 inches and weighs between 70 and 85 pounds. His relationship with children is something very special. Their presence awakens his most profound and primitive instincts. This is truly a dog for the ages! |
