The elegant "Groenendael", as it is known more widely, is a muscular black dog with a squarely proportioned body. It is the most popular of the Belgian Sheepdogs and has therefore been referred here as "Belgian Sheepdog". It has many similarities, however, with the Malinois, Laekenois and Tervuren. The coat is very full, moderately long, with a ruff around the neck and extra feathering on the underside, legs and tail. The face and lower legs are covered with short hair. It is a very smart and obedient dog and also serious and watchful like the other sheepdogs. He also need extensive socialization, like his brothers, from an early age. This Belgian Sheepdog may instinctively display herding behavior such as chasing and circling, moving effortlessly for hours and nipping at people's heels. They must have the proper training. These dogs also make excellent police and guard dogs once they have been trained. Their height is generally around 24-26 inches and weight is 65-75 pounds |
