The Belgian Malinois is also a sheepdog with a more square appearance. They hail from the Belgian city of Malines. In most parts of the world the four Belgian varieties are all considered one breed. However in America, the AKC has recognized the Malinois as a separate breed. This dog's body is about as long as it is tall. It is a muscular dog but still very agile. The front legs are straight and run parallel to each other, with very round and cat-like feet. The short-haired coat is fawn to red to mahogany with a black mask. They are very smart and obedient dogs and also very serious and watchful, like the other sheepdogs. They have a strong protective and territorial instinct. They need extensive socialization from an early age, and firm training from an experienced master. These dogs are usually 24-26 inches tall with the females standing a couple of inches shorter. They generally weigh between 55 and 65 pounds.
