The Bearded Collie, or "Beardie" as he is known is a medium-sized herding dog with a shaggy coat. He has a tail that is constantly wagging! This dog is an ancestor of the Old English Sheepdog and the similarity is obvious. There is a broad head, short muzzle and a shaggy coat even under the chin , thus his name "Beardie". The color of the coat changes during the life of the dog. Puppies are generally born black, brown, fawn or blue. The coat then changes to light gray or cream. As they reach older age it returns to black, brown, blue, or fawn. Males tend to be more bold and outgoing, while females tend to be calmer and more submissive. They also tend to be noisy barkers. Height is generally around 200 to 22 inches. Weight runs from 40 to 60 pounds. The "Beardie" is always very joyous, affectionate and happy-go-lucky. Obedience training is a must, however, as they can be a little headstrong at times. |
