This dog is one of only five breeds that originated the United States. It was originally used by hunters as a retriever and flusher of wildfowl and as a personal family companion. Relatively small in stature, he stands about 15" - 18" at the shoulder and weighs about 25-45 pounds. He is just the right size for today's hunter, however, who must live with restricted hunting areas and often times in smaller urban quarters. The coat is a beautiful and curly, dark chocolate brown. This dog is a tight little bundle of raw energy that can even swim like a champ! They can turn around instantly in the water because their tails serve as a rudders. Quick to learn, eager to please, and thriving on attention, they have a history of being "granddad's old dog". "My grandfather had a dog like that. It was the best dog he ever owned." |
