The Coonhound has a muddy origin. There are many breeds which have developed in the US since their introduction. These include the Treeing Tennessee Brindle, The Bluetick Coonhound, The Plott Coonhound, The Redbone and The Treeing Walker. All of these are excellent hunters that excel in speed and courage. In general, the term "Coondog" was meant to refer to any dog that liked to hunt raccoons. The official number, however, of specific breeds are "six", all of which have a good scenting power and a strong desire to capture their prey. As a companion pet, these dogs are usually intelligent, laid back, and happy. They are most at ease in the wild outdoors. Of these six breeds, the Redbone is probably the most uniform as to type and size. The breed is distinguished by the medium build, pleading eyes and a "sweet" voice. The rich, deep red color makes the Redbone a striking dog to look at.
